As a young activist without access to institutional grants and traditional nonprofit funding sources, Jahmal Cole needed a way to pay for the grass-roots work he was doing on the South Side of Chicago. And so, his now-iconic black hoodie—emblazoned with the name My Block My Hood My City stitched in blue and accompanied by the famous red stars of the Chicago flag—was born.
